Using vernier calipers

Using Vernier calipers. This measuring device is being used to measure the diameter of a metal ball bearing. The external jaws are being used. The other jaws (above ball bearing) are the internal jaws, used to measure internal distances such as the diameter of a hole. Vernier calipers are calipers (a type of measuring device) that have a Vernier scale to allow accurate measurements. The jaws are moved using the wheel (under thumb), and the value is read from the scale in the oval area at centre right. The scale here is given in both centimetres (lower scale) and inches (upper scale). The scale marked on the oval window (the Vernier scale) allows measurements to be made with increased accuracy, here to a 10th of a millimetre or to 128th of an inch. The scale shows that the ball bearing is 1.59cm (0.625 inches) wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the precise measurement of a metal ball bearing using Vernier calipers. The image captures the intricate details of this measuring device, highlighting its functionality and accuracy. In focus are the external jaws, which are employed to measure the diameter of objects like this spherical ball bearing. Positioned above the ball bearing are the internal jaws, used for measuring internal distances such as hole diameters. The Vernier calipers featured in this photograph boast a remarkable scale system that enables highly accurate measurements. By turning the wheel located under one's thumb, users can effortlessly adjust and position the jaws according to their requirements. The oval area at center right displays an easily readable scale where values can be obtained with precision. Notably, these Vernier calipers provide dual scales in both centimeters (lower scale) and inches (upper scale). However, it is worth noting that what truly sets them apart is their Vernier scale marked on an oval window. This unique feature allows for increased accuracy when making measurements – here depicted as being able to determine dimensions up to a 10th of a millimeter or down to 128th of an inch. From this particular image, we learn that the measured width of the ball bearing is 1.59cm (0.625 inches), providing valuable insights into its size and dimensions. Overall, this picture beautifully captures how science and engineering intertwine through technological advancements like Vernier calipers in order to achieve precise measurements essential across various fields such as physics, engineering laboratories, or any scientific experiment requiring accurate data collection.
