Photographic laboratory, 19th century

Photographic laboratory. Photographer developing positive plates in a laboratory. As opposed to negatives, these are positives, but are still used in a similar way to produce photographic prints. The difference is that negative images are an inversion of the original image (with light areas appearing dark and dark areas appearing light). A positive image or plate is one that doesn t reverse the original image. Whether a photographic process produces positive or negative images depends on the chemicals used. Artwork from the eighth volume (second period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree
