Native American census roll, artwork

Native American census roll. Artwork of a census roll of an Indian band at Mille Lac, Minnesota, USA. This census was compiled in 1849 by Nago-nabe, a Chipeway Indian, to send to a US agent to calculate payments. Individuals are denoted by their family or totem sign, and here a pictogram depicting the common name of the chief in each family is used. The strokes below indicate the number of individuals in the family. The figure at bottom right is the sacerdotal chief. This census roll indicates 34 families consisting of 108 people. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of Native American history. The artwork, known as the Native American census roll, was created in 1849 by Nago-nabe, a Chipeway Indian from Mille Lac, Minnesota. Its purpose was to provide statistical information to a US agent for calculating payments. The intricately designed census roll is an anthropological treasure. Each individual within the Indian band is represented by their family or totem sign, depicted through pictograms. Additionally, the chief's common name is illustrated with great detail and care. The strokes below each symbol indicate the number of people in each family. With its grid-like structure and array of symbols, this artwork offers valuable insights into tribal life during the 19th century. It serves as both an historical record and an anthropological study of indigenous communities in North America. According to this particular census roll, there were 34 families comprising a total population of 108 individuals at that time. Notably, it also highlights the presence of a sacerdotal chief at the bottom right corner. This photograph captures not only the beauty and significance of Native American art but also sheds light on how statistical information was compiled within these communities over a century ago. It stands as a testament to cultural heritage and invites us to appreciate the rich tapestry of indigenous traditions that have shaped our world today.
