Great image of Petr Petrovich Shirshov (1896-1953), a prominent Russian polar explorer, hydrologist, and scientist. Shirshov's impressive career began in the 1930s when he participated in numerous expeditions aboard the vessels "Sibiryakov," "Chelyuskin," and "Krasin." He was also a researcher at the first Soviet drifting station North Pole-1 from 1937 to 1938. Shirshov held various important positions throughout his career, including Director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (aRI) from 1938 to 1939, Deputy Chief of GlavSevMorPut (Arctic Ocean Sea-lane Administration) from 1939 to 1942, Commissioner of the State Committee of Defense in 1941, and Minister of the Marine Fleet of the USSR from 1942 to 1947. He also founded and served as the Director of the Institute of Oceanology of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1945 to 1953. Shirshov's accomplishments were recognized with numerous awards, including three Orders of Lenin, two Labour Red Banner Orders, the Red Star Order, and a medal, as well as the honor of being made a Hero of the Soviet Union in 1938.
