EDITORS COMMENTS
Pharsalia" by Lucan: A Glimpse into the Ancient World of Roman Civil War This title cover, printed in 1519, showcases the first edition of "Pharsalia," an epic Latin poem by the renowned Roman poet, Marcus Annaeus Lucanus, also known as Lucan. Born in Cordoba, Hispania Baetica, around 39 AD, Lucan was a prominent figure in the early Roman Empire. The image on the cover is a meticulously crafted engraving, featuring a detailed pediment adorned with various symbols and figures. At the center, the title "Pharsalia" is prominently displayed, with the subtitle "Bellum Civile" (Civil War) beneath it. The pediment is topped with a classical architectural design, complete with columns and a triangular gable. The central scene on the cover depicts the pivotal moment before the Battle of Pharsalus, one of the decisive engagements of the Roman Civil War between Julius Caesar and Pompey. The two adversaries, Caesar and Pompey, are depicted in the foreground, locked in a tense and dramatic moment. Caesar, with a determined expression, reaches out to offer a handshake or a kiss of peace to Pompey, who recoils, signaling his rejection. In the background, the chaos of war unfolds, with armies clashing on the battlefield, and the city of Pharsalia engulfed in flames. The scene is further enriched with intricate details, such as the cross and the figure of Jesus and the Disciples, including Judas Iscariot, in the upper left corner, symbolizing the Christian interpretation of the end of the ancient world and the beginning of the new. This exquisite cover is a testament to the enduring allure of Lucan's masterpiece, which continues to captivate readers with its vivid portrayal of the Roman Civil War and the complexities of human nature.
