EDITORS COMMENTS
Cybele, the Phrygian goddess of nature, fertility, and motherly love, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving by B. Andrei after a painting by Angelo Monticelli. The goddess is shown riding in a chariot drawn by four majestic lions, symbolizing her power and dominion over the natural world. Cybele holds the orb and sceptre, emblems of her sovereignty and authority. Accompanying Cybele is her beloved consort, Attis, dressed in the traditional Phrygian cap and carrying a syrinx panpipe and shepherd's crook. Attis was a shepherd god and the consort of Cybele, known for his ecstatic devotion to her. The scene is reminiscent of the Phrygian cult of Cybele and Attis, which spread from Anatolia to Rome and other parts of the Mediterranean world. The Phrygian people were known for their distinctive caps, which are worn by the figures in this illustration. The background of the engraving shows the ruins of a temple or a city, possibly Troy, with soldiers in helmets and shields, suggesting the backdrop of ancient wars and conflicts. The scene evokes the epic tales of the Trojan Wars, as told in Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid. The emotional intensity of the scene is heightened by the grief-stricken pose of Cybele, who is shown kneeling beside the corpse of her beloved Hector, the Trojan prince, and cradling their son Astyanax in her arms. The relief on the sarcophagus behind them depicts the scene of Priam, Hector's father, begging for his son's body from Achilles, the Greek hero who had killed Hector. This illustration is a beautiful and evocative representation of the complex mythology and history of the ancient world, and a testament to the enduring power of art to capture the imagination and inspire awe.
