EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1963, a young and energetic Margaret Thatcher, then Member of Parliament for Finchley and Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Ministry of Pensions, is seen trying out the new dry ski run at Festival Gardens in Battersea Park. The dry ski run, an innovative winter sport attraction, was a novelty at the time and Thatcher was among the first to give it a go. Dressed in a stylish ski suit and holding onto a sledge, Thatcher exudes a sense of excitement and determination as she makes her way down the dry ski run. The dry ski run, which was operated by Lillywhites, a well-known sports retailer, provided an alternative to traditional skiing and allowed people to enjoy the thrill of the sport during the off-season. The photograph captures a moment in time when Thatcher, who would later become the first female British Prime Minister, was still making a name for herself in politics. The image is a testament to her adventurous spirit and her love for sports, which she continued to enjoy throughout her life.
