Skye Bridge, Highland, Scotland
Skye Bridge, Highland, Scotland. This bridge connecting the Isle of Skye to the Scottish mainland was opened in 1995. It carries the A87 road across Loch Alsh. Prior to the construction of the bridge, Skye and the mainland were only connected by a ferry service. The bridge aroused great controversy in Scotland and on Skye in particular because of the high toll levied by its private operators. Travellers had no alternative but to use the bridge as the ferry service had been discontinued as soon as it was completed. In December 2004 the bridge was purchased by the Scottish Executive for £ 27 million and the tolls were abolished

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Skye Bridge in Highland, Scotland. Built in 1995, this bridge served as a vital connection between the Isle of Skye and the Scottish mainland, replacing the need for a ferry service. However, controversy surrounded its construction due to the high tolls imposed by private operators. Despite public discontentment, travelers had no choice but to utilize this modern marvel. The image showcases the stunning landscape surrounding the bridge with mountains towering majestically in the background. The silhouette of a sailing boat gracefully glides across Loch Alsh beneath it, adding an element of tranquility to this bustling transportation hub. In December 2004, after years of dispute and dissatisfaction among locals and tourists alike, the Scottish Executive purchased the bridge for £27 million and abolished toll charges. This decision brought relief to those who relied on this crucial link between Skye and mainland Scotland. Peter Thompson skillfully captured this momentous structure against a colorful sky that perfectly complements its architectural beauty. His lens not only highlights civil engineering at its finest but also tells a tale of political negotiations and geographical significance. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity while showcasing Scotland's breathtaking natural wonders. It symbolizes progress while reminding us of our ability to overcome controversies through collective action for greater accessibility and unity within our communities.
