Illustrations of the War in Denmark: barrack life of Danish soldiers: Sunday afternoon, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Illustrations of the War in Denmark: barrack life of Danish soldiers: Sunday afternoon, 1864. Engraving...illustrating the barrack life of the Danish soldiers at Sundsmark, in the Isle of Alsen, while they were kept there to be employed in the defence of Sonderburg and Duppel. The sketches, full of life and humour, were taken by Mr. Simon [sic?] Simonsen, our Danish Artist, about a month since - in fact, on Sunday, April 17, the day before the capture of the Duppel redoubts...[Here we see a wag who has borrowed a horse] to act the part of a Prussian General - perhaps Field Marshal Wrangel - riding with the queerest air of mock dignity past the ranks of his admiring soldiers, who salute him as he passes, and who seem to be greatly amused. The Danish soldiers, at all times remarkable for their quiet good-humour, have enjoyed many a joke at the expense of the Prussian military officials, with their pedantry and pride'. EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Glimpse into Barrack Life: Danish Soldiers' Sunday Afternoon Delight**
In this charming illustration, created in April of 1864, we catch a glimpse of the lighter side of war. The scene depicts Danish soldiers stationed at Sundsmark on the Isle of Alsen, enjoying their Sunday afternoon with humor and camaraderie. As they await deployment to defend Sonderburg and Duppel against Prussian forces, these brave men find solace in playful jests.
At center stage is a wag who has borrowed a horse to impersonate none other than Field Marshal Wrangel of the Prussians - an impressive feat! With mock dignity, he rides past his comrades-in-arms, receiving salutes and laughter from those gathered. The Danish soldiers' good-natured humor shines through in this momentary reprieve from the gravity of war.
This delightful illustration captures a fleeting instant when levity prevails over adversity. It serves as a testament to the resilience and wit of these Danish warriors, who find joy even amidst conflict. A poignant reminder that, despite the turmoil surrounding them, human connection can bring solace in times of uncertainty.
