VII -The Gallipoli Shell-Diverter for returning the Enemy's Fire" There were other theatres of war besides he Western Front, and after the disastrous landings at Gallipoli off the Dardanelles strait, the soldiers were force to dig trenches there too. Blistering heat in the summer led to disease, and dysentery killed more men than did bullets. Heath Robinson remembered the soldiers who fought at Gallipoli in his "Rejected by the Inventions Board" series, although this time his contraptions are scattering Turkish soldiers wearing fez hats, rather than Germans in their Pickelhaube helmets. Jacks Saloon, Happy Hollow, Hot Springs, Arkansas

Jack's Sallon Bar at Happy Hollow. An "amusement park" of sorts, Happy Hollow was established in the late 1880s or early 1890s by Norman McLeod off Central Avenue on what is now Fountain Street. Mr. McLeod also delighted many with his photography skills. Nearly everyone who has family that lived near Hot Springs in the early 1900s has one or more photographs taken there. The park was best known for its humorous photographs. Happy Hollows visitors could have their pictures made in an old bathtub, riding on the back of a burro, or taking a drink at the bar (as seen here with a multitude of humorous signs!), which contributed to Arkansass hillbilly image. Drunken man staggering home - about to hit lampost

Racing Illustrated - "Some delay at the post!" - a gentleman who has had a serious session at the Old Blue Bell (see 10909661) endeavours to make his way home. He has so far shed both shoes and is about to have a close encounter with a lamppost, which he appears to believe is his front door. Two young street urchins are not pretending to hide their amusement at his predicament. Date: 1904
