Impressionism is an art movement that began in France during the late 19th century. It was characterized by a focus on capturing light and color, as well as a rejection of traditional techniques and subject matter. Impressionist painters sought to capture the momentary, sensory effect of a scene rather than its details. They often used short brush strokes to create an overall effect of movement and light, rather than focusing on individual objects or figures.
The most famous impressionist painters include Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro. These artists were part of a group known as the “Impressionists” who exhibited their works together in Paris from 1874-1886. Their works were initially rejected by the public and critics alike for their lack of traditional technique and subject matter; however, over time they gained recognition for their unique style which focused on capturing fleeting moments in nature with bold colors and expressive brushwork.
The impressionists’ works are now considered some of the most influential pieces in art history due to their influence on later movements such as Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism and more recently Abstract Expressionism. The movement also had an impact on photography with photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz experimenting with similar techniques to capture moments in time through light manipulation.
Overall Impressionism has had a lasting impact not only on painting but also other forms of visual arts such as photography due to its focus on capturing fleeting moments through color and light manipulation rather than traditional techniques or subject matter
