EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the mid-19th century, showcases The Great Western Docks in Plymouth, specifically the Floating Dock, which was completed in 1857. The plans for this engineering marvel were meticulously prepared by the renowned British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and the project was executed under the supervision of Mr. Power, the resident engineer. The cost of the construction amounted to a substantial sum, nearing a quarter of a million sterling. The Floating Dock boasts an expansive area of 13 acres, with a quay-wall stretching an impressive length of 3490 feet. The entrance gates measure an impressive 80 feet in width. In addition to the floating dock, there is a graving dock, 367 feet in length, with gates equally as wide and a chamber width of 92 feet. The combined area of the wharfs surrounding the floating dock surpasses 15 acres. A pier and a pontoon are also part of the impressive infrastructure, offering a depth of water alongside ranging from 12 to 24 feet under low water spring tides, capable of accommodating an impressive 4000 tons of coal. This photograph is an engraving from the Illustrated London News, published in 1857, providing a glimpse into the bustling maritime activity of the time. The scene is filled with the sights and sounds of steamships and sailing vessels, their masts towering above the quayside, their smoke stacks billowing plumes of steam into the sky. The international code of signals, as indicated by the maritime signal flags, adds to the sense of activity and communication. The wooden engraving showcases the grandeur and importance of Plymouth's role as a major port in Britain during the nineteenth century.
