The Field Byre, 1933 (oil on canvas)
TW427014 The Field Byre, 1933 (oil on canvas) by Bateman, James (1814-49); 80.3x112.5 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: The yellow stone and distinctive pillars of the cattle shelter suggest that this scene was painted in the Cotswolds. Bateman painted many rural scenes in this area, as he taught at the art college in Cheltenham for many years. The blocks of strong colour are characteristic of his pictures of the 1920s and 30s. Together with the exaggeratedly high viewpoint, the colours give the picture a slightly unreal quality. Bateman sometimes composed scenes in his studio, but always based them on careful studies on the spot; ); Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums

The Field Byre, 1933
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by James Bateman that transports viewers to the picturesque countryside of the Cotswolds. This stunning print showcases a traditional yellow stone cattle shelter with distinctive pillars, evoking a sense of rustic charm and tranquility. Bateman's deep connection to the rural landscapes he painted is evident in this piece. As an art college teacher in Cheltenham, he often found inspiration in his surroundings, capturing the essence of farm life with meticulous attention to detail. The blocks of vibrant colors used throughout the composition are characteristic of Bateman's style during the 1920s and 30s, adding an almost dreamlike quality to the scene. In "The Field Byre" we are transported into a serene farmyard bustling with activity. Cows peacefully graze nearby while pigs roam freely amidst bales of hay and straw. A gate stands open, inviting us further into this idyllic setting where piglets playfully explore their surroundings and a calf rests comfortably in its stable. This masterful painting not only captures the beauty of rural life but also serves as a testament to Bateman's skill as an artist. Through careful observation and study on location, he brings forth an authentic representation that resonates with both nostalgia and admiration for simpler times. "The Field Byre" invites us to immerse ourselves in its timeless beauty—a reminder of our deep-rooted connection to nature and agricultural traditions that continue to shape our world today.
