Global Color View of Mars

June 8, 1998 - Global Color View of Mars. The orthographic view shown here is centered at 20 degrees latitude and 60 degrees longitude. The orthographic view is most like the view seen by a distant observer looking through a telescope. The color balance selected for these images was designed to be close to natural color for the bright reddish regions such as Tharsis and Arabia, but the data have been stretched such that the relatively dark regions appear darker and less reddish than their natural appearance. The north polar cap is visible in this projection at the top of the image, the great equatorial canyon system (Valles Marineris) below center, and four huge Tharsis volcanoes (and several smaller ones) at left. Also note heavy impact cratering of the highlands (bottom and right portions of this mosaic) and the younger, less heavily cratered terrains elsewhere

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Global Color View of Mars" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the enigmatic red planet. Taken on June 8,1998, this image showcases an orthographic view centered at 20 degrees latitude and 60 degrees longitude. The perspective resembles that of a distant observer peering through a telescope. The color balance chosen for these images aims to replicate natural colors in the bright reddish regions like Tharsis and Arabia. However, the data has been stretched to enhance contrast, resulting in darker and less reddish appearances for relatively dark areas. As we explore this mosaic-like composition, various prominent features come into focus. At the top of the image lies the majestic north polar cap, while below it stretches Valles Marineris - an awe-inspiring equatorial canyon system. To the left stand four colossal Tharsis volcanoes accompanied by several smaller ones. The bottom and right portions reveal heavily cratered highlands contrasting with younger terrains displaying fewer impact scars. With its spherical shape dominating our view, Mars unveils its textured surface adorned with impact craters and intriguing geological formations such as gullies and abysses. This comprehensive snapshot provides valuable insights into planetary science as it maps out different regions across Mars' globe. As we immerse ourselves in this extraordinary portrayal captured by Stocktrek Images, we are reminded once again of humanity's insatiable curiosity about space exploration and our ongoing quest to unravel the mysteries of neighboring worlds like Mars.
