Stanley Steamer car, 1906

Stanley Steamer car. This is the 1906 model of the steam-powered car produced by the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, a US company that operated from 1902-1917. The steam engine is at the front of the car, in the coffin-shaped bonnet section. In 1906, a Stanley Steamer called the Stanley Rocket set a world land speed record of 205.5 kilometres per hour, and is still (as of 2006) the faster ever steam car. Photograph published in The March of Commerce (1927), volume 4 of The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Stanley Steamer car, a true marvel of early 20th-century technology. Produced by the esteemed Stanley Motor Carriage Company in the United States, this particular model hails from 1906. The steam-powered engine is prominently displayed at the front of the vehicle, nestled within its distinctive coffin-shaped bonnet section. Intriguingly, it was a Stanley Steamer called the Stanley Rocket that etched its name into history books in 1906 by setting a remarkable world land speed record of 205.5 kilometers per hour. Even to this day, as recently as 2006 when this photograph was published, no other steam car has surpassed its incredible feat. The image itself comes from The March of Commerce (1927), which forms part of The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States - an extensive series commemorating America's founding in 1776 across fifteen volumes. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to an era where innovation and progress were rapidly transforming transportation. This vintage automobile represents not only a significant milestone in automotive history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit for technological advancement. It is through such historical artifacts that we can appreciate how far we have come while honoring those who paved the way for modern-day transportation systems.
