EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming scene of Koryak children standing beside a cooking fire in the village of Tymlat, located in the Russian Far East. Nestled on the picturesque Russian Pacific coast, this northern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula is home to the indigenous Koryak people. In their traditional culture, they are skilled fishers along the coastal regions and adept reindeer herders inland. The wintry backdrop showcases the harsh Arctic tundra terrain that these resilient individuals call home. The photograph was taken in February 2006 when temperatures plummeted well below freezing, creating a snowy and icy landscape. Despite such challenging conditions, these young boys exude joy as they gather around the warm flames to enjoy a nourishing meal. Their clothing made from natural materials like fur provides essential warmth against Siberia's biting cold. Surrounding them are huts constructed with wooden poles and covered with sturdy tents made from animal skins or other available resources. This nomadic lifestyle reflects their deep connection to nature and their hunter-gatherer society. Through this image captured by Science Photo Library, we catch a glimpse into an ancient culture thriving amidst modern times – where tradition meets resilience in harmony with nature's elements. It serves as a reminder of humanity's diverse cultural tapestry and our ability to adapt to even the most extreme environments while finding solace around something as simple yet profound as a cooking fire.
