Flu virus, TEM

Flu virus. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through influenza (flu) virus particles (virions, purple) budding from a host cell. This is the final stage in viral replication. Viruses are only able to replicate in a host cell; flu viruses replicate in respiratory cells. They hijack the cells machinery, making it produce new copies of the virus. When the core of a new virus is assembled it moves to the host cells membrane, which has viral proteins embedded in it. The core pushes out and buds off from the host cell, taking part of the membrane as its envelope. Magnification: x60, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of the flu virus at its final stage of replication. Captured through a transmission electron microscope (TEM), this image reveals influenza virions, represented in striking purple hues, budding from a host cell. The flu virus is notorious for its ability to replicate solely within respiratory cells by exploiting their machinery to produce new copies of itself. As depicted in this photograph, once the core of a new virus is assembled within the host cell, it migrates towards the cell's membrane adorned with viral proteins. With remarkable precision and efficiency, the core pushes outwards and separates from the host cell, enveloping itself with a portion of the membrane as an envelope. This process marks both an awe-inspiring feat of biology and a crucial step in viral replication. With magnification set at x60,000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this visually stunning image offers viewers an up-close look into the microscopic realm where infectious diseases like influenza thrive. It serves as a reminder that viruses are formidable pathogens capable of hijacking our own cells for their survival and propagation. Steve Gschmeissner's masterful capture not only provides valuable insights into virology but also highlights how scientific imagery can be both informative and aesthetically mesmerizing.
