EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the Submission of Ghent, a significant historical event that took place in 1385 in the Netherlands. The proud nobles of Ghent, a city in modern-day Belgium, had refused to submit to their ruler, Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, despite his legitimate claim to their allegiance. The impasse was due to Philippe's insistence on enforcing French language and customs in Ghent, which clashed with the city's Flemish identity. Philippe, however, was not one to be easily deterred. He had recently married Margaret of Flanders, the sister of the Count of Flanders, in an attempt to strengthen his position in the region. Margaret, a shrewd and influential woman, saw an opportunity to resolve the conflict peacefully. She organized a grand procession where the wives of the Ghent nobles performed the act of submission on behalf of their husbands. In this print, we see Margaret, dressed in her regal attire, standing in the center, with the wives of the Ghent nobles gathered around her, each one holding a symbol of submission - a rod or a ring. The scene exudes an air of grace and diplomacy, as Margaret skillfully manages to bring about peace between her husband and the rebellious nobles. The event marked the end of the Ghent uprising and solidified Philippe's rule in the region. This historical print is a testament to the power of diplomacy and the influence of women in shaping the course of history. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the political landscape of medieval Europe and the complex dynamics of power and allegiance.
