Flanders is a region in the northern part of Belgium, bordering the Netherlands and France, and is divided into five provinces: West Flanders, East Flanders, Antwerp, Limburg and Brussels-Capital Region. The region has a rich history and culture that dates back to the Middle Ages. Its capital city is Brussels which is also the capital of Belgium. Flanders has an important role in European politics as it hosts several international organizations such as NATO and the European Union. The economy relies heavily on its manufacturing industry which produces chemicals, textiles, food products and machinery. Tourism also plays an important role in its economy with many visitors coming to explore its historic cities such as Bruges and Ghent or visit one of its many nature parks or beaches along the North Sea coast.
