EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite yet unused tailpiece design titled "Duchess Malfi" from around 1930. Created by the talented British artist Henry Weston Keen, this pen and ink drawing measures approximately 17 1/8 x 14 1/2 inches (435 x 368 cm). Keen, known for his work as a printmaker and illustrator during the vibrant years of the 1920s and 1930s, possessed a unique ability to create unsettling symbolist art reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley. Although this particular artwork never made it into publication, it is fascinating to observe how Keen's style evolved through time. His attention to detail and intricate linework are evident in this piece, showcasing his mastery over the medium. Notably, Keen received two significant commissions for luxury editions published by Bodley Head, a renowned firm that launched in the late 1890s with Oscar Wilde's iconic novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray". Keen's talent shines through in this mesmerizing tailpiece design inspired by John Webster's play "The White Devil". The composition exudes an air of mystery and intrigue while capturing the essence of the Duchess Malfi character. This print serves as a testament to Keen's artistic prowess during his tragically short career from 1899 to 1935.
