6th Solvay Conference on Physics. Group portrait of scientists attending the 6th Solvay Conference on Physics in Brussels, Belgium. At front centre (left to right) are Marie Curie, Paul Langevin and Albert Einstein. These conferences were started by the Belgian physicist Ernest Solvay (1838-1922) in 1911. At them, some of the leading thinkers of the day in physics, chemistry and sociology discussed recent advances in their fields. Many of the ideas about quantum mechanics, the atom and cosmology were developed at them. Photographed in October 1930

Charles Regan, British ichthyologist
Charles Tate Regan (1878-1943), British ichthyologist. Regan did much work on fish classification. He joined the British Museum (Natural History) in 1901. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1917. Later, he became Keeper of Zoology. From 1927 to 1938, he was director of the Natural History Museum. Photographed circa 1930
