The Kinecar by William Heath Robinson
Double page illustration by William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) showing a well-equipped omnibus transporting passengers while they watch a film. The caption reads,'a luxurious vehicle fitted with many devices for the comfort of passengers returning home on a winter's evening, an interesting (and true) forecast for the future of travel. Robinson was a regular contributor to the Sketch, the Bystander and other ILN titles during his lifetime. His weekly drawings featuring mind-boggling contraptions and designs were immensely popular. Christian Dior sketching a fashion design, 1948
In 1947 Christian Dior (1905-1957) created a sensational collection labelled the New Look. His designs centred around gowns with an 18 inch waist, which focused attention on the bust and hips. He paired the nipped in waist with a full skirt, using a large amount of material. These designs were seen as luxuriously extravagant because of the rationing that was still in force, following the Second World War. Dior developed his talents through a study of art which included painting, magazine illustration and European architecture

Royal Wedding 1947 - bride and bridesmaid dresses
A fairytale wedding gown by Norman Hartnell for Princess Elizabeth, in itself a tribute to British skill in design and workmanship. Cut on classic lines in ivory duchesse satin, it is lavishly enriched with pearl and crystal embroidery. The 15 ft train of pearl embroidered ivory silk tulle falls from the shoulders beneath the enveloping folds of the crisp tulle veil. The Winterhalter style dresses for the bridesmaids in ethereal white tulle over satin are scattered with syringa flowers in applique satin embroidered in pearl and crystal. The going-away ensemble in love-in-the-mist blue is on the right; shoes to go with it in elasticated mushroom beige suede are shown, with the bridal shoes and bridesmaids head dress above. Date: 1947
