EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the grand reception hall of Palazzo Vizzani in Bologna. The year is 1693, and Senator Francesco Ratta has organized an extravagant banquet to celebrate the conclusion of his term as gonfalonier. The table setting, meticulously depicted in this etching by Marcantonio Chiarini and Giacomo-Maria Giovannini, showcases opulence and elegance fit for nobility. At the center of attention stands a magnificent centerpiece designed by Giuseppe Mazza and sculpted by Sebastiano Sarti. Adorned with griffins, symbolizing Francesco Ratta's emblem, it also features La Felsina personified atop a rocky base representing the Apennines. This masterpiece commands admiration from all who feast their eyes upon it. The round table itself is adorned with sugar sculptures known as trionfi di tavola, skillfully crafted by Giovanni Battista Zaccarini. These edible works of art add an extra touch of splendor to the already lavish display. To complete this visual spectacle, we see a credenza on the right side of the image while above us stretches an illusionistic frescoed ceiling and frieze painted by Tommaso Laureti. Depicting scenes from Alexander the Great's story, these masterful artworks transport guests into another world entirely. This print not only captures a specific moment in time but also serves as a testament to the artistic talent and refined taste that characterized noble gatherings during this period in history.
