Canvas Prints from Science Photo Library
Marburg virus, TEM
Marburg virus, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This tubular RNA (ribonucleic acid) virus causes Marburg haemorrhagic fever in humans and non-human primates. Symptoms of the rare and often fatal disease include fever, muscle pain, rash, diarrhoea and haemorrhage. The virus was first documented in 1967 when there were simultaneous outbreaks of haemorrhagic fever in laboratories in Marburg and Frankfurt in Germany, and in Belgrade in Yugoslavia. The outbreak was traced to vervet monkey tissue used in research. Magnification: x60, 000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the Marburg virus, a deadly pathogen that causes Marburg haemorrhagic fever in both humans and non-human primates. The coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) reveals the intricate details of this tubular RNA virus, which is enveloped and filamentous in structure. The image serves as a reminder of the severe consequences associated with this rare disease. Symptoms include fever, muscle pain, rash, diarrhoea, and haemorrhage. Unfortunately, Marburg haemorrhagic fever often proves fatal. First documented in 1967 during simultaneous outbreaks in Germany and Yugoslavia, the origins of this outbreak were traced back to vervet monkey tissue used for research purposes. This zoonotic virus has since posed significant challenges to medical professionals around the world. With a magnification level of x60,000 when printed at just 10 centimetres wide, this photograph allows us to appreciate the complexity and danger presented by such microscopic organisms. It highlights how advancements in microscopy have revolutionized our understanding of biology and medicine. As we gaze upon this false-coloured representation of the Marburg virus under a microscope's lens, we are reminded not only of its potential for devastation but also of humanity's ongoing battle against infectious diseases like these.
