Vladimir Ilich Lenin, Russian Bolshevik revolutionary leader, aged 4, with his sister Olga, 1874
Vladimir Ilich Lenin, Russian Bolshevik revolutionary leader, aged 4, with his sister Olga, 1874. Lenin (1870-1924) became leader of the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic and Labour Party in 1903. He became involved in revolutionary politics when studying law at University in the late 1880s. In 1895 he was arrested by the authorities, serving a years imprisonment followed by four years exile to Siberia. In 1906 he left Russia for security reasons, becoming the focus of the revolutionary opposition abroad. Lenin returned to Russia in 1917 after the February Revolution, but had to flee to Finland after a failed workers uprising in July. In October the Bolsheviks overthrew Alexander Kerenskys Provisional Government in a further revolution, and Lenin was elected Premier of the Soviet Union. He was wounded in an assassination attempt in 1918 and this, together with the strains of revolution and the ensuing Civil War, led to a deterioration in his health. After a stroke left him partially paralysed in 1922, Lenins active role in government declined. Olga died in 1891. Found in the collection of the State Museum of History, Moscow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a rare glimpse into the early years of Vladimir Ilich Lenin, the renowned Russian Bolshevik revolutionary leader. Taken in 1874 when he was just four years old, Lenin is seen alongside his sister Olga. Little did anyone know at that time that this young boy would grow up to become one of the most influential figures in history. Lenin's path towards revolution began during his university days while studying law in the late 1880s. His involvement in radical politics led to his arrest by authorities in 1895, resulting in imprisonment and subsequent exile to Siberia for several years. However, these setbacks only fueled Lenin's determination and commitment to bring about change. After leaving Russia for security reasons in 1906, Lenin became a prominent figure within the revolutionary opposition abroad. He returned to Russia following the February Revolution of 1917 but had to flee once again after an unsuccessful workers uprising later that year. In October of the same year, Lenin and his Bolshevik faction successfully overthrew Alexander Kerensky's Provisional Government through another revolution. Subsequently elected as Premier of the Soviet Union, Lenin played a pivotal role during this tumultuous period marked by assassination attempts and civil war. As time went on, Lenins health deteriorated due to various factors including an assassination attempt and stroke which left him partially paralyzed by 1922. Despite these challenges, his legacy as a visionary leader who shaped modern-day Russia remains indelible. The photograph also serves as a poignant reminder of Olga's untimely death in 1891 before her brother rose to prominence. Preserved within the State Museum of History in Moscow, this image offers us an intimate glimpse into both personal and political dimensions of Vladimir Ilich Lenin's life before he became an iconoclastic force reshaping world history.
