Tiglath-pileser inspecting Gifts from Egypt (litho)

8660903 Tiglath-pileser inspecting Gifts from Egypt (litho) by Dudley, Robert Ambrose (1867-1951); Private Collection; (add.info.: Tiglath-pileser inspecting Gifts from Egypt. The Egyptian king soon heard of Tiglath-pileser's expedition to Northern Syria, in the course of which he had penetrated to the Mediterranean coast; and, in order to gain his good-will, sent him a present. It was doubtless in consequence of Tiglath-pileser's fame as a hunter that the gift he sent took the form of a crocodile and another animal, strange to the Assyrians, which may probably be identified as a hippopotamus. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the moment when Tiglath-pileser, the renowned Assyrian king and hunter, inspects gifts from Egypt. The Egyptian king, eager to gain Tiglath-pileser's favor, sent him a unique present consisting of a crocodile and another mysterious animal - possibly a hippopotamus. These exotic creatures were unfamiliar to the Assyrians but served as tokens of goodwill and diplomacy between ancient kingdoms. The scene depicted in this print is not just a simple exchange of gifts; it represents the complex web of political alliances and power dynamics that characterized ancient civilizations. Tiglath-pileser's reputation as a skilled hunter may have influenced the choice of these unusual animals as gifts, showcasing Egypt's knowledge of his interests and preferences. As we gaze upon this historic artwork, we are transported back in time to an era of exploration and discovery. The intricate details captured by artist Robert Ambrose Dudley bring to life the grandeur and significance of this diplomatic gesture between two mighty empires. Through this lithograph, we are reminded of the rich tapestry of history woven through interactions like these - where cultures collide, trade flourishes, and alliances are forged through symbolic gestures such as these remarkable gifts from Egypt.
