Alligators are large reptiles found in the United States and China. They have a long, muscular body with thick, armored skin and powerful jaws filled with sharp teeth and can grow up to 15 feet in length and weigh over 500 pounds, and are carnivores, eating fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and other reptiles. They use their strong tails to propel themselves through water and can swim at speeds of up to 20 mph. They also use their tails for defense against predators by slapping the water or swinging it from side to side. Alligators live in freshwater swamps, marshes and lakes where they build nests for their eggs which hatch after about two months of incubation. Alligator populations have declined due to habitat loss but conservation efforts are helping them make a comeback.
