EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in space exploration. Taken on May 1,1959, in Huntsville, Alabama, it showcases the incredible Monkey Baker inside a bio-pack couch as he is prepared for the Jupiter (AM-18) flight. Alongside him is Able, an American-born rhesus monkey who also embarked on this groundbreaking mission into suborbit. The image exudes both anticipation and excitement as Monkey Baker sits comfortably in his container, ready to embark on this daring adventure. The meticulous preparations taking place around him highlight the immense effort put into ensuring the safety of these brave primates. Jupiter AM-18 was launched successfully on May 28th of that year, marking a significant milestone for NASA's missile program. Both monkeys were recovered unharmed after their journey through space. This vintage photograph not only serves as a testament to the scientific advancements made during the late 1950s but also highlights our fascination with exploring new frontiers beyond Earth's atmosphere. It reminds us of how far we have come since those early days of testing and experimentation. As we reflect upon this remarkable piece of history captured by Underwood Archives from Universal Images Group (UIG), we are reminded of the courage and determination displayed by these animal pioneers who paved the way for human space travel.
