The Great Eastern Isambard Kingdom Brunel proposed to the Eastern Steam Navigation

The Great Eastern
Isambard Kingdom Brunel proposed to the Eastern Steam Navigation Company the construction of a steamship five or six times the size of any then in use. It would use two forms of power: paddle-wheels and screw-engines. Constructed from iron at Millwall, London, between 1853 and 1858, the Great Eastern was the largest vessel afloat until she was broken up in 1888. Only in 1899 were her dimensions exceeded by the SS Oceanic. The Great Eastern was not a success as a passenger vessel and was sold for a fraction of her building cost. She was used as a cable-laying ship, most notably laying the Transatlantic telegraph cable in 1865-1866

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Great Eastern, a monumental feat of engineering proposed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to the Eastern Steam Navigation Company in the 19th century. With its groundbreaking design, this steamship was unlike anything seen before, towering over all other vessels of its time. Constructed from iron at Millwall in London between 1853 and 1858, it held the title of being the largest ship in existence until its demise in 1888. Despite not finding success as a passenger vessel and being sold for a mere fraction of its building cost, the Great Eastern left an indelible mark on history. This technological marvel was repurposed as a cable-laying ship after her commercial ventures faltered. Notably, she played a pivotal role in laying down the Transatlantic telegraph cable between 1865 and 1866. As we gaze upon this remarkable engraving, we are transported back to an era defined by innovation and ambition. The image encapsulates both the grandeur and significance of this colossal ship that pushed boundaries within the shipping industry. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of progress. Through this photograph from www. TopFoto. co. uk, we are reminded of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's visionary spirit that forever transformed water transport technology. The Great Eastern will forever be remembered as an awe-inspiring symbol of courageously venturing into uncharted waters - quite literally - leaving behind an enduring legacy for generations
