The Trundle 21025_07

The Trundle, St Roches Hill, West Sussex. Inside the well-defined ramparts of an Iron Age hillfort lie the fainter remains of a Neolithic causewayed enclosure dating to perhaps 3700-3300 BC. Although the function of such enclosures is not clear they were not settlements. Photographed in November 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph captures the ancient landscape of The Trundle, located in St Roches Hill, West Sussex. Within the well-preserved ramparts of an Iron Age hillfort lies a more elusive treasure - the remnants of a Neolithic causewayed enclosure dating back to approximately 3700-3300 BC. This intriguing site has puzzled archaeologists for centuries as its purpose remains shrouded in mystery. The image, taken by Historic England Archive in November 2000, showcases the intricate earthwork that defines this historical gem. From above, one can appreciate the strategic positioning and impressive construction techniques employed by our ancestors thousands of years ago. While it is uncertain what exactly these enclosures were used for, they are believed to have served purposes other than settlements. Perhaps they held ceremonial or ritual significance within their communities or functioned as gathering places for social events. Whatever their original intention may have been, these enigmatic structures continue to captivate our imaginations and offer glimpses into our distant past. Through this remarkable photo print, we are transported back in time and reminded of the rich history that lies beneath our feet. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and curiosity about our origins while encouraging us to explore further into the depths of archaeological wonders like The Trundle.
