White matter fibres of the human brain C018 / 6391
White matter fibres. Computer enhanced 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. Both methods allow mapping of their orientations and the connections between brain regions. Data/software: NIH Human Connectome Project /humanconnectomeproject.org)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of white matter fibres in the human brain. Through computer-enhanced 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI), these bundles of nerve fibres are beautifully visualized, revealing their crucial role in transmitting signals between different regions of the brain and connecting it to the spinal cord. Utilizing a magnetic field to map water within neuron fibers, DSI allows for an accurate representation of the criss-crossing patterns formed by these vital pathways. Similar techniques like diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) also aid in exploring neural data related to white matter fibres, enabling researchers to map their orientations and connections across various brain regions. The significance of this research lies in unraveling the complexity and functionality of our nervous system. By studying these intricate networks, scientists gain valuable insights into how information is processed and communicated within our brains. The data used for this image originates from NIH Human Connectome Project, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to mapping out human brain connectivity. As we delve deeper into understanding white matter fibres through advanced imaging technologies like DSI and DTI, we inch closer towards unlocking mysteries surrounding neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or multiple sclerosis. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about one of nature's most remarkable creations – the human brain.
