Venus, synthetic aperture radar map

This Magellan Radar image of the Venus surafce in January 1991. The large 120 km structure is a socalled corona, the smaller features are called " pancakes" with a diameter of 35 kilometers. These are thought to have formed by eruption of extremly viscous lava. The Aine Corona, this is the name of the feature, is located in a vast plain to the South of the Aphrodite Terra

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and mysterious surface of Venus, our neighboring planet in the solar system. Taken by the Magellan Radar in January 1991, it reveals a synthetic aperture radar map of Venus' topography. The prominent feature captured here is a massive corona spanning an impressive 120 kilometers, aptly named Aine Corona. Surrounding this colossal structure are smaller formations known as "pancakes" measuring approximately 35 kilometers in diameter. These intriguing pancakes are believed to have formed through eruptions of highly viscous lava, leaving behind distinct marks on Venus' geology. Located within an expansive plain south of Aphrodite Terra, Aine Corona stands out amidst the planet's diverse landscape. This mesmerizing mosaic provides valuable insights into planetary science and volcanology while offering glimpses into the geological wonders that exist beyond Earth. The image was obtained using advanced imaging radar technology aboard the Magellan probe, enabling scientists to study Venusian features such as cracks, impacts, rilles (channels), arachnoids (spider-like structures), and rivers flowing through valleys. It serves as a testament to humanity's continuous exploration and understanding of celestial bodies throughout the 20th century. Detlev van Ravenswaay's masterful capture invites us to marvel at the beauty and complexity found within our vast universe while igniting curiosity about other planets and asteroids that await further astrogeological exploration.
