Vacuum flask by Dewar, 1898 C016 / 3671

Dewar flask. An early design of vacuum flask made by James Dewar in 1898. This consists of two glass flasks, one inside the other, that are joined at the top. The space between the flasks is evacuated of air. Both flasks have silvered surfaces. The coating and the vacuum combine to drastically reduce heat transport by convection or conduction. Dewar used this design in his experiments on the magnetic properties of liquid hydrogen. This object is preserved at the Royal Institution, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an iconic invention from the late 19th century - the Vacuum flask by Dewar. Created in 1898 by James Dewar, this early design revolutionized heat insulation technology. The photograph reveals two glass flasks delicately joined together at the top, with a mesmerizing silvered surface coating both vessels. The genius of this vacuum flask lies in its ability to drastically reduce heat transport through convection or conduction. By evacuating the space between the flasks and utilizing silvered surfaces, Dewar ingeniously created a thermal barrier that defied conventional temperature transfer methods. Originally used for experiments on liquid hydrogen's magnetic properties, this historic artifact is now carefully preserved at London's prestigious Royal Institution. Against a pristine white background, the flask stands as a testament to human ingenuity and scientific progress. With its rich history and significant contribution to cryogenics and thermal insulation, this object serves as a fascinating reminder of our relentless pursuit of knowledge. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from the past, we are reminded of how far we have come in harnessing science for practical applications. This print captures not just an item but also embodies centuries worth of scientific exploration and discovery. It invites us to appreciate both the beauty and functionality behind inventions that have shaped our world today.
