Soviet Vostok spacecraft. Photographed in 1968, this spacecraft consists of a spherical descent module (upper right) which carries the cosmonaut through re-entry, on top of a conical instrument module. This design was behind the Vostok spaceflight programme, which made Yuri Gagarin the first man in space. As well as manned flight, it could also be used as a platform for a camera, so that it could double as a spy satellite
