Pernicious anaemia, light micrograph

Pernicious anaemia. Light micrograph of megaloblast blood cells from bone marrow in a case of pernicious anaemia, also known as Biermers anaemia. A megaloblast is an enlarged erythroblast, the immediate precursor to a mature red blood cell. Pernicious anaemia is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B12 or folic acid due to the intestine being unable to absorb these substances. Compared to a normal blood smear, the number of red blood cells is severely reduced and those that are present are enlarged or deformed. Symptoms of the condition include tiredness and lowered immunity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of pernicious anaemia, a condition characterized by an abnormality in red blood cells. The light micrograph reveals megaloblast blood cells derived from bone marrow, which are enlarged erythroblasts on their way to becoming mature red blood cells. Pernicious anaemia, also known as Biermers anaemia, arises due to a deficiency of vitamin B12 or folic acid that the intestine fails to absorb. Compared to a normal blood smear, this image highlights the severe reduction in red blood cell count and their distorted shapes. The unhealthy and deformed appearance of these cells is indicative of the disorder. Individuals suffering from pernicious anaemia often experience symptoms such as fatigue and weakened immunity. Through this scientific lens, we gain insight into the cellular level intricacies associated with this pathological condition affecting our circulatory system. This light micrograph not only serves as a valuable resource for medical professionals studying haematology but also offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of cell biology.
