EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of navigational history - the Pantometer from the 16th century. The engraving, originally published in London in 1597 by William Barlowe, provides us with a detailed illustration of this ingenious instrument. The Pantometer was an essential tool for sailors and explorers during the Age of Discovery. Its purpose was to determine both bearing and elevation to a specific point. The design consisted of a base plate that could be turned to align with the object being observed, while the compass provided accurate readings for bearing. To determine elevation, a sighting bar could be raised or lowered accordingly. This monochrome engraving beautifully captures the intricate details of this historical artifact. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge during an era when navigation played such a crucial role in exploration. Todd-White Art Photography has expertly captured this image, allowing us to appreciate not only its scientific significance but also its artistic value.
