Old and new gasometers, 1897

Old and new gasometers. 19th-century artworks of an old model (left) and a new model (right) of gasometers (gas storage units) for fuels such as acetylene and wood gas. The new model has two gasification units (smaller cylinders). Gasification converts carbon-based materials, such as coal, biofuel and biomass, into a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen (wood gas). These units were constructed in Paris by G. Trouve. Artworks from the first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stark contrast between old and new gasometers, providing a glimpse into the evolution of fuel storage units in the late 19th century. On the left stands an antiquated model, representing a bygone era with its robust structure and single gasification unit. In stark juxtaposition, the modern gasometer on the right boasts two smaller cylinders for enhanced efficiency. These artworks were meticulously crafted by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton as part of his groundbreaking publication "La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle" in 1897. The intricate diagram offers insight into how carbon-based materials like coal, biofuel, and biomass were transformed through gasification into a potent mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen known as wood gas. Constructed under the skilled hands of G. Trouve in Paris, these technological marvels symbolize progress within Europe's industrial landscape during this period. While one can't help but appreciate the historical significance of these engineering feats, they also serve as a reminder of our reliance on fossil fuels at that time. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking image, it prompts us to reflect on how far we have come technologically while urging us to continue seeking sustainable alternatives for energy production in our present-day world.
