Mudstone and shale cliff, Dorset C017 / 8237

Mudstone and shale cliff, Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset, UK. This view shows the rock strata and alternating layers of bitumous shale (grey) and calcareous mudstone (brown). Cliffs such as this are hazardous due to loose shales and the risk of rockfalls. This area is part of the Jurassic Coast Heritage Site. It is rich in oil and fossils. The Kimmeridge Clay Formation is composed of mudstones and shales. The fossils include shells of ammonites and bivalves, and the bones of marine reptiles, dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Some of the shales are rich in oil, with pumps used to extract oil from depths of around 550 metres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stunning beauty and geological significance of a mudstone and shale cliff in Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset, UK. The image showcases the intricate rock strata with alternating layers of bituminous shale in grey and calcareous mudstone in brown hues. However, beneath this picturesque facade lies a hazardous terrain due to loose shales and the constant risk of rockfalls. Situated within the renowned Jurassic Coast Heritage Site, this area is not only rich in oil but also teeming with fossils that offer glimpses into prehistoric marine life. The Kimmeridge Clay Formation, composed of mudstones and shales, holds an abundance of ammonite shells, bivalve shells, as well as bones from ancient marine reptiles, dinosaurs, and pterosaurs. The cliffs' treacherous nature serves as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature's forces. Despite its dangers, this coastal stretch remains an alluring destination for geology enthusiasts who are fascinated by Earth's history etched into these sedimentary layers. Captured by Dr. Keith Wheeler from Science Photo Library in 2011, this print invites viewers to appreciate both the breathtaking scenery and scientific wonders hidden within it. It serves as a testament to our planet's ever-evolving landscape while reminding us to tread carefully on its fragile shores.
