EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable adaptation of the Mountain hare (Lepus timidus) as it undergoes its seasonal moult. Native to Northern Europe, including Scotland, this elusive species thrives in moorland and mountainous regions such as the Cairngorms National Park. The image captures a single hare against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery, highlighting its natural camouflage. In summer, these hares don a brown fur coat that seamlessly blends with their surroundings. However, as winter approaches, they shed their brown fur and transform into stunning creatures adorned in white. This incredible color change allows them to remain inconspicuous amidst snow-covered landscapes. The solitary nature of Mountain hares is evident in this photograph; however, during harsh winters when resources are scarce, they may form temporary groups for survival. With an ability to gather up to 70 individuals together under challenging conditions, these hares demonstrate resilience and adaptability. Photographed in December by Science Photo Library within the picturesque Cairngorms National Park, this image provides a glimpse into the fascinating world of these enchanting creatures. It serves as a reminder of the diverse wildlife found across Europe's mountainous terrains and highlights the biological wonders that can be observed even within our own backyards.
