Marey type sphygmograph, 19th century C017 / 6933

Marey type sphygmograph, made in France around 1870. This instrument is boxed, made from gilt metal and has a clockwork mechanism. The sphygmograph, originally invented in 1854 by German physiologist Karl von Vierordt, was used by physicians in the nineteenth century as a means of observing and measuring the pulse externally and non-invasively. The radial pulse wave forms would be traced with a mounted pen. The Marey type was developed in 1863 and named after its designer, Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904). This was considered an improved version of the earlier model due to its portability

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of medical history - the Marey type sphygmograph. Created in France around 1870, this exquisite instrument is encased in gilt metal and features a clockwork mechanism. Originally invented by German physiologist Karl von Vierordt in 1854, the sphygmograph revolutionized pulse observation and measurement for physicians during the nineteenth century. With its portable design, the Marey type sphygmograph allowed doctors to non-invasively trace radial pulse wave forms using a mounted pen. Considered an improved version of its predecessor, this device played a crucial role in advancing medical knowledge and understanding of cardiovascular health. The metallic gleam against a pristine white background accentuates both the antique charm and scientific significance of this apparatus. Its intricate details evoke images of dedicated physicians carefully measuring pulses to diagnose ailments and monitor patients' well-being. As we gaze upon this historical relic, we are transported back to an era when medicine relied on mechanical ingenuity rather than digital technology. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of how far healthcare has come while honoring the pioneering work of Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904), whose name graces this exceptional invention. Science Photo Library captures not only the beauty but also the educational value behind such artifacts that have shaped our understanding of human physiology throughout time.
