Lens of the eye, light micrograph C016 / 0526

Lens of the eye. Light micrograph of a section through the lens from a human eye. The lens consists of thousands of precisely aligned stacks of fibres seen here end-on, that were formerly elongated epithelial cells but during development, lose their nuclei and organelles. Some lens fibres show nuclei, indicating ongoing early development. Lens fibres contain a very high concentration of crystalline proteins that, together with the lack of a nucleus or organelles, are largely transparent to light. Interlocking and alignment of the curved lens fibres not only refracts light but the fibres also vary in curvature as the lens, being flexible, changes in shape to focus on near or far objects. Magnification: x111, when printed 10 centimetres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Lens of the Eye" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate structure and functionality of our visual organ. Captured through a light microscope, this magnified image showcases a section through the lens of a human eye, revealing thousands of precisely aligned stacks of fibers seen end-on. Formerly elongated epithelial cells, these fibers undergo remarkable transformations during development. As they lose their nuclei and organelles, they become transparent to light due to their high concentration of crystalline proteins. Some fibers still bear nuclei, indicating ongoing early development within the lens. The interlocking and alignment of these curved lens fibers serve two crucial purposes: refracting light and adapting to changes in shape for focusing on near or far objects. This flexibility is made possible by the varying curvature among the stacked fibers. The sight we often take for granted is truly an extraordinary feat achieved by this complex arrangement within our eyes. The healthy and developed state depicted in this micrograph highlights both its biological significance and anatomical beauty. With its blend of science and artistry, this print from MICROSCAPE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY invites us to appreciate not only the wonders hidden within our bodies but also the incredible capabilities that enable us to perceive the world around us with such clarity.
