Jetstream clouds
Jetstream clouds seen over north-western Libya. The jetstreams are high-altitude, fast-moving air currents that are a few thousand kilometres long. Cirrus clouds form at these high altitudes (these winds form between 7 and 14 kilometres high) and are swept along in the jetstream. The windspeeds can range from 60 to 125 kilometres per hour. The jetstreams form due to thermal effects, forming at the boundary between a warm and cold body of air. Photographed from Earth orbit on mission STS-113 (23 November to 7 December 2002), which was flown by the Space Shuttle Endeavour

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of jetstream clouds hovering over north-western Libya. These high-altitude, fast-moving air currents stretch across thousands of kilometers, creating a breathtaking spectacle in the sky. Cirrus clouds gracefully form at these lofty heights, carried along by the powerful jetstreams that flow between 7 and 14 kilometers above the Earth's surface. With windspeeds ranging from 60 to 125 kilometers per hour, these atmospheric phenomena are a testament to nature's raw power. The formation of jetstreams is attributed to thermal effects occurring at the boundary between warm and cold air masses. This particular snapshot was captured during mission STS-113 by the Space Shuttle Endeavour as it orbited our planet. The image offers a unique perspective from space, allowing us to witness this natural wonder unfold against the backdrop of Africa's vast Sahara desert. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of the intricate interplay between Earth's atmosphere and climate systems. It serves as a reminder that even in remote corners of our world like north-western Libya, nature continues its ceaseless dance with weather patterns and cloud formations. This remarkable image is brought to you by Science Photo Library – an invaluable resource for exploring our planet's diverse environments and deepening our understanding of meteorology and cloud types.
