Heart attack
Heart attack. Artwork of a heart that has been damaged by a heart attack. The blood supply to the tissue of the heart was interrupted, leading to an area of tissue (purple, lower right) dying. This area is called an infarct, and since the heart is mostly muscle tissue, this is called a myocardial infarction. The plane at right shows the heart in section, showing how the dead tissue extends deep into the wall of the heart. The outer surface of the heart has small blood vessels that bring blood to and from the heart muscle. The infarction was caused by a blockage in one of these, probably, as shown at left, by a build up of fatty deposits (yellow) inside a coronary artery
