Glacier, Greenland

Aerial view of a glacier in southern Greenland flowing through a long and narrow valley (fjord) carved by the movement of ice. This image was taken as part of a six-year NASA mission called IceBridge. Where the edge of the glacier meets the sea (bottom right) there is a layer of floating ice dimpled with chunks of icebergs that have broken off from the glacier. Understanding ice melanges, as these conglomerations are called, is important because there is evidence that they can slow the rate that glaciers like this slip into the sea. Imaged with a camera aboard NASAs P-3B aircraft on 25th April 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking aerial view captures the majestic beauty of a glacier in southern Greenland. As part of NASA's six-year mission called IceBridge, this image provides valuable insights into the movement and impact of ice on our planet. The glacier can be seen flowing through a long and narrow valley, known as a fjord, which was carved over time by the relentless force of ice. At the edge where the glacier meets the sea, an intriguing sight unfolds. A layer of floating ice stretches out, dotted with chunks of icebergs that have broken off from the main body. These conglomerations are called ice melanges and play a crucial role in slowing down glacial retreat into the ocean. The significance of understanding these icy formations cannot be overstated. By comprehending how melanges function, scientists gain knowledge about mitigating climate change impacts as glaciers slip into the sea at varying rates. Imaged with precision using NASA's P-3B aircraft on April 25th, 2012, this photograph showcases nature's grandeur against a backdrop of mountainous terrain covered in snow and ice. It serves as a testament to Earth science research efforts aimed at unraveling mysteries hidden within our planet's icy landscapes.
