Gherman Titov, Soviet postcard
Gherman Titov, Soviet postcard. Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov (1935-2000) was the second person to orbit the Earth. Launched in the Vostok 2 spacecraft, he orbited the Earth 17 times from 6-7 August 1961, just four months after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Titov ate two meals and slept in orbit before re-entering the Earths atmosphere after 25 hours in space. He received many awards and decorations for his pioneering space flight. Included here is the Cyrillic for the dates of his spaceflight, the name of his spacecraft, the CCCP designation for USSR, and the word slava (glorification). The orbits (blue circles) of Vostok 2 (gold star) and a laurel branch are also shown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, a true pioneer of space exploration. In this historical image, we see Titov wearing his space suit and helmet, symbolizing the courage and determination of early astronauts. The photograph showcases the technological advancements of the 20th century as he embarked on his groundbreaking mission in August 1961. Titov's journey aboard the Vostok 2 spacecraft marked him as only the second person to orbit our planet. With an impressive feat of endurance, he completed 17 orbits around Earth within a span of just 25 hours. This remarkable achievement came merely four months after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. The postcard also includes Cyrillic text representing key elements related to Titov's historic flight: dates, spacecraft name (Vostok 2), CCCP designation for USSR (Soviet Union), and "slava" meaning glorification. Additionally, blue circles depict Vostok 2's orbits while a gold star represents its position during Titov's mission. A laurel branch further emphasizes victory and triumph. Gherman Titov received numerous awards for his pioneering role in space travel, solidifying his place in history as one of humanity’s greatest explorers beyond Earth’s atmosphere. This symbolic illustration serves as a reminder of mankind's relentless pursuit to conquer new frontiers and push boundaries through scientific progress and ingenuity.
