Expanding universe, computer artwork

Expanding universe. Computer artwork illustrating the spatial expansion of the universe, using the analogy of an expanding balloon. Here, the universe and its galaxies are situated on the surface of the balloon, so that when it is inflated (left to right), the galaxies all recede from each other. Because the 2D surface of the balloon is analogous to the 3D fabric of space, it helps to grasp the idea that the motion of the galaxies is not through space, but is due to the expansion of space itself. In addition, there is no centre to this expansion as the universe will appear to be expanding uniformly from the point of view of any galaxy. This analogy was used by the British astronomer Arthur Eddington (1882-1944) in his book The Expanding Universe (1933)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork, titled "Expanding Universe" beautifully illustrates the spatial expansion of our vast cosmos. Using the analogy of an expanding balloon, this print showcases the concept that galaxies and our universe are situated on the surface of a balloon. As we inflate it from left to right, an intriguing phenomenon unfolds before our eyes - all galaxies recede from one another. What makes this artwork truly remarkable is its ability to convey that this motion is not due to galaxies moving through space but rather a result of space itself expanding. The 2D surface of the balloon serves as a metaphor for the 3D fabric of space, helping us grasp this mind-boggling idea. Furthermore, there is no central point in this cosmic expansion; every galaxy perceives uniform growth from its own vantage point. This profound insight was first introduced by British astronomer Arthur Eddington in his seminal book "The Expanding Universe" published in 1933. Through meticulous attention to detail and artistic flair, Science Photo Library has created a visual masterpiece that merges science with art seamlessly. This print invites viewers into the realm of astrophysics and cosmology while stimulating their imagination about the boundless wonders hidden within our ever-expanding universe.
