Pale Blue Dot, Voyager 1 image

This unique narrow-angle color image is of the Earth, dubbed Pale Blue Dot, is a part of the first ever portrait of the solar system taken by Voyager 1. The spacecraft acquired a total of 60 frames for a mosaic of the solar system from a distance of more than 4 billion miles from Earth and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic. From Voyager's great distance Earth is a mere point of light, less than the size of a picture element even in the narrow-angle camera. Earth was a crescent only 0.12 pixel in size. Coincidentally, Earth lies right in the center of one of the scattered light rays resulting from taking the image so close to the sun. This blown-up image of the Earth was taken through three color filters -- violet, blue and green -- and recombined to produce the color image. The background features in the image are artifacts resulting from the magnification

Eagle Nebula

Eagle Nebula. Optical image of the Eagle Nebula (M16, NGC 6611). This is an emission nebula, a cloud of gas that glows as the hydrogen gas it contains is ionised by radiation from the hot young stars within it. The stars in the cluster are about 5. 5 million years old, young in stellar terms. They formed from the coalescence of the nebula's gas. M16 is around 7000 light years from Earth in the constellation Serpens Cauda. This image was produced by a CCD (charge-coupled device) at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, USA.

Andromeda galaxy

Andromeda galaxy (M31), optical image. Thegalaxy comprises a central nucleus surrounded byspiral arms. The nucleus appears more yellow thanthe spiral arms as it contains a higher proportionof dust and older, redder stars. Two smallsatellite galaxies are associated with Andromeda, M32 (NGC 221), the fuzzy blob at lower right, andM110 (NGC 205), the bright star-like pointimmediately left of Andromeda's nucleus. TheAndromeda galaxy is the closest major galaxy toour own Milky Way, lying just over two millionlight years away. It is also about half as largeagain as the Milky Way, with a span of over150, 000 light years. The galaxy takes its namefrom the constellation Andromeda, in which is itfound
