Earths land cover classification, 2003

Earths land cover classification, 2003. Produced using data obtained during 2003 from the MODIS instrument on NASAs Terra satellite, this map shows the Earths surface divided into 17 different types of land cover. These include: water (dark blue), snow and ice (white), barren areas (grey), forests (shades of green), savannas (bright yellow), grasslands (light brown), wetlands (light blue), crops (light yellow), and urban areas (red). The map was produced by combining satellite and land-based data using a computer algorithm to improve on previous land cover maps. Maps such as this are used in climate change models, and also to track changes such as urban growth, desertification and deforestation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Earth's land cover classification in 2003, providing a comprehensive view of our planet's diverse surface. Created using data collected by NASA's Terra satellite and the MODIS instrument, this map divides the Earth into 17 distinct types of land cover. Each category is represented by a unique color, enabling us to easily identify different regions. The map reveals various features such as water bodies depicted in dark blue, snow and ice in white, barren areas in grey, lush forests displayed with shades of green, vibrant savannas highlighted in bright yellow, grasslands shown in light brown hues, serene wetlands portrayed with light blue tones, flourishing crops illustrated with light yellow shades, and bustling urban areas marked in red. By combining satellite imagery and ground-based data through advanced computer algorithms, this map surpasses previous land cover maps' accuracy. It serves multiple purposes including aiding climate change models and monitoring changes like urban expansion or environmental degradation due to desertification and deforestation. Scientists utilize maps like these to gain insights into global patterns while tracking regional transformations such as agricultural growth or loss of natural habitats. With its relevance spanning across climatology studies to hydrology research and beyond; this image represents an invaluable tool for understanding our ever-changing planet.
