David de Planis Campy, French alchemist

David de Planis Campy (1589-c.1644), French alchemist, physician and surgeon. The circular French inscription gives his name and states that here, in 1627, he is in his 38th year and is surgeon to the French King (at the time, Louis XIII). The term edelphe refers to him being a follower of the theories of Paracelsus, also indicated by references to the microcosm and macrocosm on the book in front of him. Planis Campy wrote on phlebotomy, musket wounds, the plague, and mineral and chemical remedies. This artwork, with additional French text at bottom, is from Planis Campys Bouquet compose des plus belles fleurs (1629)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of David de Planis Campy, a renowned French alchemist, physician, and surgeon from the 17th century. In this artwork, we see him seated at a table with an intense focus on his face as he engrosses himself in reading a book. The circular French inscription surrounding him reveals that it is 1627 and he is in his 38th year, serving as the esteemed surgeon to King Louis XIII. The term "edelphe" signifies his allegiance to Paracelsus' theories, which are further indicated by references to the microcosm and macrocosm on the open book before him. Known for his expertise in various fields, Planis Campy wrote extensively on topics such as phlebotomy, musket wounds, mineral remedies, chemical remedies, and even the plague. The intricate details of this art piece extend beyond its central figure. A beautifully decorated border frames the image while additional French text at the bottom provides more context about Planis Campy's work titled "Bouquet compose des plus belles fleurs" published in 1629. Todd-White Art Photography skillfully captures both the historical significance of this momentous figure and highlights his contributions to medicine through this monochrome portrait.
