Cinnamon plant, 16th century

Cinnamon plant. 16th-century artwork of a cinnamon plant (Cassia monspelii) with its flowers and leaves. Monspelli is Latin for Montpellier, France. The bark of cinnamon is used as a spice, and in the 16th century it was extensively traded between Europe and South-East Asia. This woodcut is from Vita clarissimi philosophi et medici excellentissimi Conradi Gesneri (1566) by the Swiss theologian Josias Simmler (1530-1576). This work was a biography of the Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner (1516-1565)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning 16th-century artwork of a cinnamon plant, known scientifically as Cassia monspelii. The intricate illustration depicts the plant in all its glory, with its delicate flowers and lush leaves beautifully captured. Interestingly, the name "Monspelli" derives from Montpellier, France, highlighting the historical significance of this spice. During the 16th century, cinnamon bark was highly sought after and extensively traded between Europe and South-East Asia. This aromatic spice played a crucial role in culinary traditions worldwide. The woodcut featured in this print is extracted from Vita clarissimi philosophi et medici excellentissimi Conradi Gesneri (1566), an esteemed biography by Swiss theologian Josias Simmler. The work itself pays homage to Conrad Gessner, a renowned Swiss naturalist who lived during the same era. With its monochrome aesthetic and meticulous attention to detail, this art piece captures not only botanical beauty but also serves as an invaluable historical artifact. Todd-White Art Photography has skillfully preserved this remarkable image for us to admire today. As we gaze upon it, we are transported back in time to appreciate both the artistic talent behind it and the significant role that cinnamon played in shaping our global history.
